The Invisible Fence
## A deer and a fence
A deer can jump about 15 feet high. But you can keep a deer inside a fence that only comes up to its chest.
It never jumps out. It just walks up and down along the fence, day after day. It could get out in one jump, but it never tries.
It sounds strange. But many of us live the same way.
## Why the deer doesn't jump
The deer is strong enough to jump. The problem is that it can't see what's on the other side. A deer won't jump if it can't see a safe place to land.
So the fence that really traps it isn't made of wood. It's in the deer's mind. Its legs work fine. It just can't see past the fence.
## Our own fences
We trap ourselves in the same way. Our fences aren't made of wood. They're made of things people told us when we were growing up.
"We always eat this. Papa ate it, Dadaji ate it, and Mummy says the same." This is about food, but it's true for lots of things. Which job is "safe." Which city we live in. What our family has never tried. We didn't choose these rules. We just followed the people who came before us.
Then there's *aukaat*. It means the idea of what someone "like you" is allowed to dream about. This fence is hard to spot because it feels like being humble. But if you dream too big, people say you've forgotten your place.
## The fence won't open by itself
We don't jump, so the fence has to be broken. Waiting doesn't help. Nobody opens the gate for a deer that has stopped looking for a way out.
Breaking it isn't easy, though. When a kid talks about big dreams, people around them get nervous. Parents worry. Neighbours talk. Friends laugh and say, "How will you ever do that?"
Most of the time, they don't mean to hurt you. They live behind the same fence. When you try to jump, it reminds them of their own limits, and that feels uncomfortable.
## How to find your fence
You can't jump a fence you can't see. So first, find it.
1. **Write down what you've never questioned.** Think about school, jobs, money, and who you can become. For each one, ask: "Did I decide this, or did someone tell me?"
2. **Find out where it came from.** Was it your parents, a teacher, or people in your area? A rule that helped them may not fit your life.
3. **Look over the fence.** The deer stays because it can't see where to land. Find one person who is already doing what you dream of. Seeing that it's possible makes the jump easier.
4. **Try one small thing.** You don't have to change your whole life at once. Pick one rule you were taught and test it in a small way this month.
5. **Get ready for people to doubt you.** When people you love laugh at your dream, it shows their fence. It doesn't show what you can do.
## Anyone can jump
It all comes down to five words: *koi bhi kar sakta hai*, which means "anyone can do it." This is true for the deer. Every deer in that fence can jump out. All it needs is to believe there's safe ground on the other side.
It's true for you too. The fence that feels so strong was built by habits and other people's fears. What you learned, you can unlearn.
So start here: question what you were taught.
